STEVE ALAIMO & THE RED COATS - She's My Baby b/w Should I Care (Marlin - 1959)

STEVE ALAIMO joined his cousin Jim Alaimo's instrumental combo THE RED COATS while attending med-school at the University of Miami. Initially on guitar, Steve eventually stepped upfront on vocals as well. The band played the sock hop circuit, working for DJ Bob Green and label owner Henry Stone. They released this double-barreled single on Stone's small Miami, Marlin Records in 1959. On "She's My Baby", Steve sounds like he just cut class at the Gene Vincent School of Cool. He slinks around while The Red Coats create a dramatic vibe until he nearly explodes with anticipation. "Should I Care" is an urgent Cochran rocker. The twangy guitars buzz and howl as Steve belts out some nervous and shaky vocals.
