RALPH NIELSEN & THE CHANCELLORS - Scream b/w Little Demon (1962 - Surf Records)

At the tail end of the 1950s the original raw sound of rock and roll had come under attack. Whether it was the uproar from religious leaders, school boards and uptight parents or the record labels consciously sugar-coating the sound with a flood of teen idols and cutesy girls the rebellious nature had been tamed. However, one defiant group of delinquents in Metuchen, New Jersey must not have gotten the memo. In 1962, RALPH NIELSEN & THE CHANCELLORS were regulars at the weekly teenage hop at the Linwood Ballroom. With the place packed with over 500 kids, they played the hits of the day, especially anything "Twist" related.

In August of '62 they headed down to Princeton, packed into a small basement studio and caught the insanely out-of-control "Scream" in just one take. The song was written in a mere fifteen minutes as an answer to Joey Dee's dance floor favorite, "Shout". The sax player lets loose with a relentless flurry of screams as a blistering guitar riff tries to keep up with the frantic pace for the entire 1:53 of mayhem.
