Ever since Lenny Kaye's seminal, "NUGGETS: Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era" compilation in 1972, fans of the timeless sounds of the sixties have been fed a near constant diet of teen beat obscurities. The shockwave that emanated from its release shook musicians and record collectors alike. Off the grid enthusiasts cracked open the vaults and the first wave of fuzz-filled compilation series, (PEBBLES and BOULDERS in particular), began to flood the bins of hipper record stores. A second wave of series, (BACK FROM THE GRAVE, HIGHS IN THE MID-SIXTIES and GARAGE PUNK UNKNOWNS) and a few one-off collections, (CHOSEN FEW, CICADELIC 60s and MINDROCKER) continued to collect some of the wildest teen punk 45s from 1964 - 1967. The market became saturated through the 90s and into the 00s. As a result, the quality of the comps began to falter with only a couple of series, (TEENAGE SHUTDOWN and LAST OF THE GARAGE PUNK UNKNOWNS) maintaining a higher standard.
Fast forward to 2021. Tucked away in an off the beaten path location in France; the young musician, filmmaker and 60s garage fanatic, Achille Brunett, began to unearth uncomped 45s and created his digital compilation series, 60s FORGOTTEN THINGS. After compiling twenty-three volumes and sharing his efforts on his YouTube channel, his painstaking efforts would be rewarded. In 2024, Achille teamed up with the upstart Greek label, Sunnyboy66 Records. He began an exhaustive search for a set of untapped 45s that would become the first vinyl issue of his meticulous excavations. Combined with his own findings were a handful of contributions from a handful of avid garage collectors.
In January of 2025, 60s FORGOTTEN THINGS - WELCOME TO THE WILDERNESS! was available for eager garage fans on Sunnyboy66's bandcamp page. The track list included 17 unheard garage/psych singles that had been transferred from the original 45s. The fare ranged from the crude psych of THE CALLIOPE to the trebly garage/folk of THE REJECTS; tough garage rockers from THE DECADES and THE AGE OF REASON to a couple of Texas teen punkers cut by THE PANICS and THE KASUALS, both of which were extracted from my own extensive collection.
Encouraged by the positive reception to the first volume, Achille embarked on an even farther-reaching quest for Volume 2, IT WON'T LAST!!. Casting a wider net; singles and unissued acetates from 1964 - 1971 were included this time around. Side 1 lifts off with a pair of previously unreleased fuzz punkers from ERIC & THE NORSEMEN and THE FINITE MINDS. The theme of primitive teen beat bashers continues with entries from BUTCH, PEGGY & LITTLE JOHN, THE MIRACLE MAKERS and another of my contributions, THE UNKNOWN KIND. The heavier sounds of the latter part of the 60s into the 70s are represented robustly by YESTERDAY'S CHILDREN and II PAIR. A solid collection from start to finish - All killer, no filler!
Both volumes are beautifully packaged in eye-popping sleeves created by Achille. Each includes a double-sided, full size insert with rare photos and extensive write ups about the bands. A top tier series worthy of any garage freak's attention.
